Diaper Dilema

February 28th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in alert!, life

What’s with the diaper industry? I’m sure it is a profit thing but why can’t they offer a relatively affordable disposable diaper that’s bio-degradable? It stinks. Really. This is what I found on-line, compared to this. I know, I know. Stop yur’ belly-aching. At a certain point the ratio of garbage to dirt is going to tip the scale, and then what?

Sorry for the kvetching, just had to get it of my chest. This is because I just back from Costco where I had to buy two cases of diapers. That’s over 420 diapers! For two kids, man!

Typical quarrels last 25 minutes, followed by 30 minutes sulking — equivalent to THREE DAYS a year bickering and four days silent treatment.” - JOHN COLES, The Sun, Wedded Bliss Given a Miss

Goodbye to Girlhood

February 20th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in alert!, dad, life

While little research to date has documented the effect of sexualized images specifically on young girls, the APA authors argue it is reasonable to infer harm similar to that shown for those 18 and older; for them, sexualization has been linked to “three of the most common mental health problems of girls and women: eating disorders, low self-esteem and depression.” - Stacy Weiner, Washington Post, Goodbye to Girlhood

Teenage Drinkers Face Alcohol Tests

February 19th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in dad, family, health, life

Drinking is a growing problem in US schools. “As many as half of our kids are doing this,” says Reynolds. An estimated 1700 US high-school students died from alcohol poisoning or related accidents in 2005 alone.” - Andy Coghlan, NewScientist.Com, Teenage Drinkers Face Alcohol Tests

Personally, I don’t see a problem with testing out this program. There are arguable flaws with the standard Breathalizer Tests that the police administer. Then again, I grew up in the ‘first generation’ of the M.A.D.D. program. Boy were they good at scare tactics. You know – putting a different crumpled-up/totaled car on the lawn of the high school, in plain sight as you enter the parking lot, every morning leading up to Prom Night.

I think anything that pro-actively attempts to get drunk drivers off the road and doesn’t violates the driver’s rights in any way – is a good thing.

Where The Scary Things Live

Okay, so we all like lists. Lists are good. The internet is GREAT for lists. They’re quick and easy to read, punctuation is optional. David Letterman built a career on them. I think in general Americans love lists. we’re task oriented and what sums up a collection of tasks or items better than a list. Here are two lists. One is rather insightful and here is one that it just banal.

2. Smart Terrorists

I don’t want to give the terrorists any ideas, but have you ever taken five minutes to think of all the ways you could terrorize the entire United States on a budget of about $10? Luckily al-Qaeda is busy trying to redirect an asteroid toward the Whitehouse. I worry that they’ll give up on trying to top the last scheme and actually do some terrorizing. If those terrorists worked for your company, they would have been downsized four years ago.” - Scott Adams, The Dilbert Blog

This is very insightful. I’m with Scott. Keeping in the theme of – What Scares The Bejesus Out Of Me this is up there for me.

#14 Getting caught noticing another woman.

A man’s instinctual response to visual stimulation very rarely has anything to do with his current relationship or how he feels about it. But his lizard brain reacts instantly, and before he knows he’s doing it, he’s looking at someone else. We hate having to explain behaviors that even we don’t fully understand.” - David Zinczenko, “What Scares a Man?”

I don’t know. This sounds like a lot of safe regurgitated locker room chatter. It is a generalization. Kind of like saying Americans like lists, how ridiculous (joke). It’s clear that a lot of people didn’t agree with David by the 3300+ comments left that day about his list.
