Haba Mini-Memo Card Game @ Moolka

If you are planning to hit the road this summer, jump on a plane or just lounge around the inflatable pool with the kids, this timeless memory card game may be a good way to pass the time. The cards come in their own tin which makes it easy to throw in your carry-on.

The Haba Mini-Memo Game is a compact version of the classic memory game, in which 2 - 6 players find matched pairs of cards. Recommended for ages 4-12, though some 3-year-olds may enjoy it as well.

It’s a compact, folding barbecue that’s designed to be taken anywhere. Here’s how it works: 1. Fold it out. 2. Fill it up. 3. Light it up. And that’s it.

No complex gas bottles, no heavy lifting and no rummaging around for those ‘instant’ types that you can use once and once only. Now the spirit of summer can join you wherever you are, or even sit permanently in the boot of your car, ready for action whenever the mood takes you.

newark international airport

When you book a flight to New York City and you are planning to have the kids in tow, consider how you are going to get the family and the whole “kit” (all that luggage and so forth) from the airport to your final destination whether it is family in Brooklyn or a hotel in Mid-town. Locals know to call ahead for a car service so they’ll be there waiting for you.

Sure you can hail a cab but the car services are a better solution when traveling with the kids. A lot of the area car services have a number of different kinds of vehicles in their fleet, so if you are used to a mini-van or require a passenger van, you can request one up front.

Yes, you may spend an extra buck or two, but my feeling is it will be well worth it. The key thing when traveling with the kids is to call ahead for the reservation so there is a smooth transition from leaving the plane, to gathering your luggage right to the car - at least that’s the goal. There are many car services to choose from whether you need one from Newark, JFK or LGA car service; dare I say hundreds to choose from. One company that springs to mind is Dial 7 they have a decent website with pictures of their fleet, rates and reservation page.

Malibu Beach, Dume Point

Always in search of the best beach, my wife and I with kids-in-tow recently rolled over to this wonderful state beach. It has a sharper than usual slope to the water but provides a fun and dramatic surf for the kids to play in. Boogie boards dash the horizon. You may see an occasional sea lion and if your lucky a starlet strolling the sands.

With a car full of all the necessary toys, food and equipment the paid parking is perfect. For eight dollars, we were able to park right up to the edge of the sand within fifty feet of our claimed spot in the sand (dads read: not too much schlepping for me!) and this was on a Saturday. You can park for free on the road leading up to the beach or back on the Pacific Coast Highway and hike it, but with kids and coolers and such, I highly advise the paid parking area.

The people watching is great, too - you have a wonderful cross-section of Angelenos enjoying the surf.

Faulkner Farm Pumpkin Patch

When Pumpkin Picking Season comes around, I always think of the Faulkner Farm. I’m not sure it is the most sincere pumpkin patch around but I’m sure the Great Pumpkin would approve. Through the month of October they have a Pumpkin Patch and Harvest Festival that is a great destination for those of us who are kid-strapped and looking for something fun to do.

They have all sorts of stuff going on besides the pumpkin patch - face painting, pony rides, live music, hay rides, the list goes on. Do yourself a favor and go on an empty stomach because the food is really good – fresh corn on the cob, tri-tip sandwiches, fresh lemonade, kettle corn, baked goods and so forth.

They’re located in Santa Paula, CA which is in Ventura County midway between LA and Santa Barbara. Coming from LA, we like to take the Pacific Coast Highway for obvious reasons - the view is a perfect way to end the day.

3-1-1 rule

According to the Transportation Security Administration (T.S.A.), there are still a number of things you can bring with you in your carry-on, but you would never know it. What are these items and where is the current list published? I don’t think the commercial airlines do a good job publishing and distributing the T.S.A. list of prohibited items. Whether you purchased your ticket online or through an agent or over the phone — you should receive a current T.S.A. list of permitted and/or prohibited items when you receive your confirmation of ticket purchase, perhaps as a good gesture or courtesy. Most parents probably know it is a challenge to travel with children in tow, being able to pack properly should be a given.

It reminds me of the mother who was forced to drink her own breast milk while passing through a JFK a few years ago. The Screener had her do this to prove that her breast milk was not a dangerous substance. At the time having her do this was well within the current laws (since then those laws have been changed). Not to say this kind of thing will happen again, but I think we should learn from this and and take it upon ourselves to be well informed Travelers.

My Mother-In-Law works the check-in counter for Frontier Airlines and the other day she was sharing some of the stories of people holding up the check-in process because they were trying to get through the screening process with things currently not allowed by the T.S.A. She was also reciting for us all the T.S.A. rules and regulations for prohibited items. There was a tone in her voice that suggested that she is used to rattling them off. This begged me to ask the question, “how are we supposed to know they can only have three onces of hair gel and it needs to be in a separate container which is in a ZipLoc sandwich bag?”

Learn the 3-1-1 Rule:

3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3 ounce bottle or less; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3 oz. container size is a security measure.

Consolidate bottles into one bag and X-ray separately to speed screening.

Be prepared. Each time T.S.A. searches a carry-on it slows down the line. Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a faster and easier checkpoint experience.

3-1-1 is for short trips. If in doubt, put your liquids in checked luggage.

Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, breast milk, and juice are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint.

Come early and be patient. Heavy travel volumes and the enhanced security process may mean longer lines at security checkpoints.

TSA working with our partners. TSA works with airlines and airports to anticipate peak traffic and be ready for the traveling public.

Where is this information published? How often does it change? What kind of rules are there when traveling with small children? Would I have any reason to doubt that I bring nail clippers in my carry-on? Cologne? Saline Solution? Please follow the related links below to educate yourself as to what is permitted when traveling.

Giraffes at the Wild Animal Park

We went to the San Diego Wild Animal Park in Escondido, CA in early July and it was typically hot — very hot. Most of the animals aren’t very active in the hot weather, especially during the day. With that in mind, I am very curious about the Beastly Bedtime Sleepovers which is designed for families with children four to seven years old. Yeah, that’s right, you and your family can have a sleep-over at the zoo — for a price, that is. Dinner, crafts, campfire songs, close-up encounters with some of the wild animals and of course getting a chance to “sleep where the wild things are” - are some of the highlights. It sounds fun but it comes with a price - Mom, Dad and Junior overnight will cost you upward of $300 and change! If money is no object you can do a Premium Package (of course) for about $475.

During our visit they had the water misters cranked up, did I mention yet that it was really hot? Anyway, the first thing you should do is take the mini-train ride around the park. It will give you a chance to glance at the massive park map while the kids can see zebras, hippos and giraffes roaming free. Of course they have a small petting zoo complete with hand-washing stations (+ soap), and some really nice random fact “stations” were somebody will come out with a strange reptile or bird or sloth and start talking to you about them (as a geeky dad, I totally got of listening to these). My wife really enjoyed the African Aviary section were you can get close to some really stunning tropical birds.

The snack bars are centrally located (of course) and the $1 refills made it a little easier on the wallet but if you are prudent, I would bring your own. My son really enjoyed the Savanna Cool Zone down by the Heart of Africa section. The Cool Zone is basically a wet play area for toddlers, which is perfectly located since it is furtherest from the park entrance and by then our son was melting. There a few things we either did not have the energy for or just plan passed up but worth mentioning is the BenBough Amphitheater and the Balloon Safari which (I assume) gives a stunning vertical P.O.V. of the park and the surrounding area.

PARENT TIPS; Bring a change of clothes for the littles ones, assuming they may want to run through the Savanna Cool Zone (I did) and if possible consider a mid-week visit — from what I have been told — it really makes a big difference.
