Kid Project – Build your own gaming system

March 11th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in dad recomendation, entertainment, tech talk
Gaming Computer Kit

Here’s a great opportunity to spend some quality time with the kids, perhaps learn something about how computers are built or just geek-out with them and save a few bucks in the process. You can design and custom build pc just for gaming for a fraction of what they cost in the stores.

You can also get upgrade kits to increase your ram or replace your CPU. In theory, all you need is a screwdriver and you can save $100’s. The basic kit at Easy As My PC (which starts at $1,200+) comes with a 2.8G Core 2 Duo, 2G SDRAM and a graphics card option – that’s a pretty good start and it’s definitely a kit with room to grow. They include plain English (gosh, I hope so!) instructions with lots of illustrations and full manufacturer warranties.

Anybody privy to high-end PC prices know that with a little digging you can find some better bargains but the attraction to this type of package is that you know everything will fit and is properly rated for the motherboard and so forth.

Great free educational coloring pages

Free coloring pages
We have a activity table set up for the kids and it is forever piled with coloring pages, doodle pads, sticker books, boxes of crayons, rubber stamps, glitter and paint markers. Coloring is something they do when they get bored with everything else. It is what they do when they’re waiting for dinner to be served. It is what they do when they are inspired to make a card for their aunt or grandmother. You get the idea.

We have found that printing free coloring pages on the backs of previously used paper is a great way to recycle at home, save a dime and offer the kids a great variety of coloring pages. Here are the latest list of free downloadable Animal & Wildlife coloring pages and other great related links to follow.

Dad’s Version of Kids’ Crafts and Activities

September 23rd, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in cool schtuff, dad recomendation, games, kids activity

messy craft table

This past month I had a rare opportunity to slip into the shoes of “Mr. Mom” (sort of). With the birth of our third, my wife and I decided to divide and conquer. At work, I cashed in all my “chips” and coupled my paternity leave with some vacation time and overdue Comp time and took the entire month off. After breakfast, I would fill a bag with snacks, grab the two oldest boys and go on an “adventure,” leaving her with the newborn so she can feed and bond with him (and rest).

The adventure was anything from going to the beach and making a massive sand castle (on of the advantages to living in LA by the beach) to hitting one of the many area playgrounds or going to the museum. We would be back in the afternoon and they were officially spent for the day. A tired kid is a good thing (an exhausted kid is quite a different thing, as parents know).

So what is there to do for the rest of day, especially when they have built every house and tower with their Legos and colored every page in their coloring book? Like most parents, I turn to the web for ideas, feeding off of the boys current obsessions (firetrucks, race cars, and anything having to do with “good guys” and “bad guys”). For me, the emphasis is on fun and if they go off on a tangent and they’re playing “nice” and having a good time – so be it.

An example of one of these activities is the Firefighter Themed Crafts and Activities, the boys never get sick of this.

  • The first thing the boys do is don their firefighter helmets and tall rubber boots (pants optional in our household).
  • If I have the time I scoop up some of their favorite stuffed animals, dolls and action figures and scatter them throughout the yard (i.e. in bushes and trees, on the back deck, etc.), fill some water bottles or turn the hose on (real low) and “alert the firefighters” of various “emergencies.”
  • When I’m feeling particularly artful, I will draw some fire on the driveway with sidewalk chalk and have them “put it out” with their water bottles or have them navigate through it to rescue their toys (of course having their toys drop and roll and so forth).
  • When that starts to get tired, we break out the fire trucks (toys) and do miniature rescues with other toys.
  • Come snack time, I make them a Firefighter Smoothie [generally strawberries, orange juice (fire colors), yogurt, a pinch of ground flax seed and a splash of milk - sorry I don't measure anything], you get the idea.

LEGO Rose for Mother’s Day

May 10th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in dad recomendation, games, kids activity

mother's day gift from kids

Here’s a fun little diagram for a rose made from LEGOs that you can make for the mom that has everything (except maybe that diamond necklace). This LEGO Rose makes an especially great Mother’s Day gift idea for kids who want to give mom a gift and don’t have the funds to purchase something. I can see their proud little faces as they give their bouquet to Mom.

The little ones can build the rose with the LEGO bricks they have lying around the house, or pick out cool new colors from LEGO’s new Pink Brick Bucket set which the entire family can enjoy together. And remember if you ever start running out of ideas or have some time on your hands check out the BrickShelf User Gallery – where people submit photos of their LEGO masterpieces.

Whoopie Pies for the Kids

April 17th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in dad recomendation, fyi, treats
whoopie pies

My sister Cheryl is the best family baker, hands down. To this day I talk very excitedly about some of her specialties, her Whoopie Pies top the list. Like all old school deserts there is absolutely no redeeming nutritional value to them. They are made with buttermilk, chocolate, and lots of butter and sugar. Needless to say, they’re not low-calorie, high fiber or all-natural so if you’re looking for that perfect desert crammed with minced beets, flax seed or spinach – move on…

Unfortunately, I am not obliged to hand out family recipes (that would be blasphemy) but Jennifer Tolley at JustBaking.Com has served up a damn good recipe for these little handful of heaven. If you aren’t impressed or you happen to stumble upon another recipe, let me explain something – if it has a whip cream filling it is not a Whoopie Pie!

So to all the dads out there interested in building a little family tradition with the kids, grab a recipe you think you can handle and master it with the kids. Your building lasting memories for them and training an army to make your favorite desert – you win, they win.
